Which insulation do I need?
Insulation is an essential building material and a great way to decrease your carbon footprint and energy bills.
Choosing the right insulation can be a challenge with so many types out there. One of the biggest factors that’ll influence your decision is the R-value, which determines the warmth – the higher the value, the warmer it keeps your home.
PIR boards, made of polyurethane foam, are versatile and used in millions of UK homes. They are half the thickness of traditional insulation making them great for loft insulation where you need as much storage space as possible.
Made with glass fibres which have been bound together to form an effective insulation solution. They have an A1 fire resistance rating and are easy to install making them ideal for most applications including walls, ceilings and floor insulation.
Made from various stone materials which have been shaped into rolls and slabs for various applications. They are known to be the best acoustic insulation out there, with excellent soundproofing & non-combustible fire ratings. These are ideal for commercial properties, home theatres and noise-sensitive spaces.
Made of multiple reflective layers, it prevents heat loss year-round by reflecting sunlight away in summer and retaining heat in winter.
Tapered insulation: Prevent water from pooling on flat roofs
Designed to be thicker on one end than the other, they create a slope to drain water away from the roof. These are great for flat roofs as they prevent water from pooling.
These are specially designed for flat roof applications. Manufactured with flat roofs in mind, these boards have a high compression ratio of over 150 kPa, unlike standard PIR boards. A high compression ratio is crucial in a flat roof system in order to avoid damage caused by movement from compression in the insulation.
At UKFR we have flat roof boards designed for a variety of installation methods. This includes foil faced boards for mechanically fixed systems, tissue faced boards for fully adhered systems, bitumen faced boards for torch on applications and Rockwool Hardrock for flat roofs that require A2 fire ratings and excellent acoustic insulative properties.
Warm roofs are an excellent addition to any building and you can be sure they will protect your property from moisture and damage when these flat roof boards are installed with a vapour barrier.
Designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce heat loss, these typically consist of a layer of insulation, such as mineral wool, and are attached to the external wall and covered with a protective finish. These are often used in retrofitting projects, such as older homes or other buildings without a cavity wall.
These are often used to insulate attics or converted loft spacers, and are easily installed either between or above rafters. These help to reduce heat loss and keep the loft space as warm as possible.
There are two types of insulation for flat roofs – cold deck and warm deck.
Cold deck insulation is used on older flat roofs and loft spaces where the structural deck is exposed. They are installed below the roof deck, with a ventilated air gap above the insulation to prevent condensation.
Warm deck insulation is used and preferred on modern flat roof projects due to better thermal performance and reduced condensation risk. These are installed above the structural deck and directly underneath the waterproof membrane, keeping the entire roof structure warm and eliminating the need for ventilation.
Please note that cold & warm deck insulation systems are not used in conjunction with each other in the same roof design.
