Self-drilling screws are designed with metal applications in mind. They feature a pointed end and threaded shaft which can be drilled into the surface without needing a pilot hole. Self-tapping screws, whilst durable, are better suited for softer materials such as hardwood. They are similar to self-drilling screws as they feature a pointed end and threaded shaft, but they do require a pilot hole for installation.
Using a self-drilling screw is fairly simple. First, Mark the location where you want to place the screw. Next, align the screw with the marking, and start drilling until it is flush. Try to avoid over-tightening as this can strip the threads and/or damage the material. In some cases, it may be necessary to create a small pilot hole using a drill bit to make it easier for the self-drilling screw to start.
