GRP roofing (also known as Glass Reinforced Plastic or fibreglass roofing) is a flexible roofing resin with fibreglass strands used to reinforce the product. This method of roofing is very popular amongst roofers for its seamless finish and various benefits among other types of roofing systems. It is often installed on a wide range of commercial and domestic properties due to its durability and longevity.
To install GRP roofing, you’ll need resin, matting, topcoat and catalyst, along with accessories such as GRP trims.
When installing GRP roofing, start by applying a layer of resin to the roof surface using a brush or roller. This next step depends on the system (most of ours are wet applied),carefully lay down matting over the top, pressing down to remove air underneath then apply another layer of resin ensuring there are no pin holes. Once the matting is down and the resin is set, mix the topcoat and catalyst and apply evenly using a brush or roller.
Glass-reinforced plastic is used in a variety of applications, including construction for roofing or walkways, alongside being used in boat buildings or car body repair shops.
Fibreglass and resin are two separate materials used to create the main part of a GRP roof.
Resin is a thick liquid that can be used when hardened with additional material, such as a hardener. Whereas fibreglass is a reinforced plastic made from strands of glass fibres, which are bonded with the resin.
Fibreglass will add durability to the roof, whereas resin will bind together the fibreglass and provide a protective coating.
