Method of Waterproofing Application

Mechanically Fixed System

A mechanically fixed waterproofing system for a flat roof involves securing a single ply roof covering to the roof structure using mechanical fastening such as screws and plates. The membrane is then overlapped over the secured fasteners and sealed using heat welding or adhesives tto create a waterproof seal. 

Examples of mechanically fixed systems include PVC, TPO and some EPDM membranes.

Fully Adhered System

A fully adhered waterproofing system for a flat roof involces securing the roof covering directly to the deck with adhesives or liquids.

Examples of fully adhered systems include Felt, EPDM rubber roofing, GRP fibreglass roofing and liquid roofing systems.
 

Deck type

Timber Deck

A timber deck must be an 18mm or thicker OSB / Plywood or similar base as this is the minimum timber deck thickness for structural requirements. 

The tube and screw combination will protrude through a timber lower deck by approximately 20-30mm as required for the correct pull out performance. These are not designed to go into the joists.
 

Steel Deck

A steel deck must be between 0.7mm and 1.2mm thick.

The tube and screw combination will protrude through the steel lower deck by approximately 20-30mm as required for the correct pull out performance.
 

Concrete Deck

A concrete deck must have a minimum fixing embedment of at least 40mm.If you have aerated concrete a different screw will be needed. Please contact us for this type of deck.

How many fixings do I need for my insulation?

Our fixings will add to your basket as a box of 100 tubes and a box of 100 screws. Please increase the quantity as per your roof size.

For a 2400mm x 1200mm board, we recommend 12 fixings per board. If your project is exposed or is in a high wind area this should be increased to 16.

For a 2400mm x 600mm T+G board, we recommend 8 fixings per board.

For a 1200mm x 1200mm board, we recommend 9 fixings per board.

What are Warm Deck Fixings?

Warm Deck Insulation Fixings are a SPRA (Single Ply Roofing Association) approved tube and screw combination which are used in warm deck flat roofs to reduce thermal bridging and provide resistance to imposed loads. 

When these are used in tandem with our self adhesive vapour barriers they create the best performing flat roofs possible.

Why do I need Warm Deck Fixings?

This tube and screw insulation fixing limits thermal bridging as the tube creates a distance between the screw head and the top deck. This means that when temperatures vary there is much less condensation and thermal bridging along the screw. This is important in reducing the risk of damage within a flat roof installation that can be a dangerous and costly issue.

These warm deck insulation fixings are also SPRA (Single Ply Roofing Association) approved for resistance to imposed loads. The space within the tube above the screw head allows for load bearing to occur without the risk of the insulation fixing piercing through the roof covering above and causing severe damage. 

How do Warm Deck Fixings work?

Warm Deck Insulation fixings are a combination of a high grade plastic tube in conjunction with an appropriate high quality fixing.

The tubes are installed into the top deck of your warm roof installation and will sit inside the insulation layer; these will terminate at least 15 - 20mm above the lower deck to allow for compression. The appropriate screw then starts at the bottom of the tube and secures through the remaining insulation and through the lower deck with a specified amount of protrusion. The protrusion creates the required pull out performance for a secure fix that will withstand the test of time.

These are not designed to be fixed into the joists and are therefore much easier to install.

For a 2400mm x 1200mm board, we recommend a minimum of 12 fixings per board. If your project is exposed or is in a high wind area this should be increased to a minimum of 15.

For a 1200mm x 1200mm board, we recommend a minimum of 9 fixings per board.
For a 1200mm x 6000mm board, we recommend a minimum of 6 fixings per board.

*These are the minimum amount of fixings recommended from the manufacturers. It is always best to ensure that your quantities meet your local building regulations and the quantities recommended by the insulation brand you are installing.
