Acoustic insulation – Knauf vs Isover
Both Knauf and Isover offer roll and slab products for acoustic insulation. Both Isover’s roll and slab products are all made from glass mineral wool, whereas Knauf’s slab products are made from rock mineral wool.
Roll insulation is more suitable for floors as it’s easier to cut down to size and requires additional support in walls to prevent sagging. Whereas batts are more suited to walls, being designed to fit snugly in between studs without requiring additional support. Having said this, they can be interchangeable and used in either application.

Which is best for acoustic performance?
Knauf’s Rocksilk is the best option for acoustic performance. This is because it’s made from stone wool, which has higher density and stiffness compared to glass wool, making it better at absorbing sound waves.
In addition, Rocksilk is supplied as a rigid batt, which is specifically designed to friction-fit between studs and joists. Unlike roll products, rigid batts do not slump or sag over time, which can otherwise reduce long-term acoustic performance.
However, insulation rolls are generally cheaper per square metre, so if you’re looking to save as much money as possible, Isover’s APR roll is still very good at blocking noise and often more than enough for residential applications.
