Measuring Your Rooflight

How to measure your rooflights

To suit a flat glass rooflight with your own builders upstand

When purchasing a flat glass roof window without a pre installed upstand (to suit a builders kerb), please ensure the outside edge of your own timber upstands are positioned at the same distance as your chosen roof light size.

For example, if you have a rooflight which measures 750mm x 750mm, you need to ensure the measurement from the outside edges of your upstand is the same. Please see the image for further clarification.

A 50mm wide upstand is recommended as minimum with a maximum width of 120mm. With the lowest edge at 150mm high.

Please see the image A for further clarification.

To suit the Skyvu Lantern

When purchasing a Skyvu lantern  unit, the size you choose needs to represent the dimensions  from the external edge of the kerb. Please ensure that you have upstands of a minimum of 100mm wide.

For example if you purchase a Skyvu Lantern at 600mm x 600mm then this will correlate to the size of the roof opening to the outer edge of the kerb.

Please see the image A for further clarification.

To suit flat glass roof window with a pre installed upstand/kerb

When purchasing a flat glass roof window unit with a pre-installed timber upstand or UPVC upstand, the stated dimensions represent the opening in the roof. Please ensure to measure the opening in the roof and then ensure that this measurement is the same size as the purchased skylight.

For example, if your skylight is 650mm x 650mm, the opening in the roof also needs to be
650mm x 650mm.

Please see the image B for further clarification.

For more information on constructing your timber upstand please see the brochure here.

Choosing Your Kerb Type

How to choose your rooflight kerb type

Choosing the kerb type for your rooflight depends on your roof, however we have two options to choose from which are detailed below.

Builders Kerb
For when you have or will be constructing your own builders kerb on site. When manufacturing your own builders kerb, it is essential that you either have a minimum slope of 5 degrees across your roof or your roof can have a minimum of a 1:80 / 1:60 fall, depending on your waterproofing, as long as you build a 5 degree minimum slope into the upstand.

Timber Kerb with 5 Degree Sloping Upstand
Your roof can have a minimum of a 1:80 / 1:60 fall, depending on your waterproofing, as the roof light has a built in 5 degree slope for water runoff.
