Description

The ClassicBond SPB Spray Contact Adhesive is a quick and effective alternative to standard bonding adhesive when securing a membrane to upstands and detailing or adhering a large ClassicBond sheet.

SPB adhesive is a spray-applied, high-strength adhesive, formulated especially for gun application and bonding ClassicBond & ClassicBond Pro EPDM to a variety of substrates.

Suitable for a range of surfaces, e.g. timber, brickwork, metal, PVC & concrete.

Note: It is not possible to reposition the membrane once stuck down using contact adhesive.

Application Up-stands:

  • Spray the contact bonding adhesive onto the upstand and the back of the membrane from a distance of 100mm-150mm.
  • It is also good practice to secure the membrane to the deck perimeter with a 150mm width strip of contact adhesive.
  • Ensure that the contact adhesive is touch-dry before rolling the membrane onto the substrate/up-stand.

Application Non-Permeable Deck:

  • Spray the adhesive onto both the deck and the underside of the membrane evenly from an approximate distance of 100-150mm.
  • Ensure that the contact adhesive is touch-dry before rolling the membrane onto the deck.

Installation Tip - Allow sufficient time for the contact adhesive to become touch-dry, depending on weather conditions. If the membrane is bonded whilst the contact adhesive is still wet, you may notice air bubbles appearing under the membrane. These will disappear within a short period of time due to the rubber roofing membrane being partially breathable.

Questions & Answers

ClassicBond vs Skyguard

Both of these are made from EPDM rubber, ClassicBond is 1.2mm & 1.5mm thick whereas SkyGuard is 1.0mm thick. This means the SkyGuard is for use on outbuildings, sheds and any other building not covered by building regs as this requires an EPDM that is 1.14mm thick as a minimum. ClassicBond can be used on all roof types.

ClassicBond vs Firestone

There isn’t much difference between the systems ClassicBond or Firestone now known as Elevate, both are EPDM membranes that come in similar thickness and are installed in a very similar way. They both have BBA certificates and life spans of 50 years. So there isn’t much between them, we here at UKFR prefer the ClassicBond system as it is slightly thicker than the Elevate for the standard system and as an overall system is slightly more affordable.

What is the guarantee on ClassicBond?

ClassicBond EPDM holds a 35 year BBA certificate and a life expectancy of 50 years. If you want to get a materials guarantee we also offer training with our partner company that once trained and qualified each roof can get a 20 year materials guarantee. You would also be on our list of approved installers and if any customer needs any work in your area we pass these leads to you.

How to install classic bond EPDM

ClassicBond is simple to install, it can be installed onto a variety of surfaces and detail sections. Please see our video here on how to install onto a timber deck.
