A rivet is a type of fastener consisting of a cylindrical shaft with a head (mandrel) on one end and a tail (body) on the other. They are used to bind two or more materials together by creating a hole, inserting the rivet and deforming the tail end to create a permanent connection.
Rivets tighten much faster compared to regular screws or bolts, along with being both durable and flexible offering wide functionality suitable for metalwork, sheet materials, woodworking and more.
There are many types of rivets out there, each suitable for different tasks including threaded insert rivets, rivet nuts and blind, solid, snap & tubular rivets. They come in a variety of sizes and are suitable wherever a strong, reliable and permanent joint is required.

For side lap stitching applications requiring a watertight and secure joint, the EJOT Bulb Tite rivet are designed with expanding claws on the underside which will work perfectly every time to ensure structural integrity, and weather resistance and prevent water or air from entering.

Solid rivets are the traditional type of rivets and consist of a solid shaft, a head, and a tail, and are commonly used for structural purposes. To install them, both sides of the materials need to be accessible.
Whereas blind rivets, also known as pop rivets, are designed to be installed from one side of the materials being joined, with the mandrel breaking off. They are designed to be installed from one side of the materials being joined and are made up of a hollow body with a rod inside. By pulling the rod, the rivet body is deformed, and a second head is created to securely fasten the two materials together.
Blind rivets also offer wide versatility and can be used to replace adhesives & sealants, nuts & bolts and screws (including countersunk, hex and more).
Rivet fixings have varying head sizes, each serving different purposes. The most common are:
Rivets are installed by inserting the rivet into pre-drilled holes in the materials to be joined. The tail end of the rivet is then deformed or set using a special riveting tool such as a rivet gun, or something found in a standard toolkit such as a spanner/wrench.
Solid rivets are generally considered permanent fasteners, however, some blind rivets can be removed used using specialised tools - although this can be a risky process leading to damages or additional repair work.
When laying sheets side by side, side laps can form. To prevent water from seeping in through these overlaps, you should lay the shorter unfinished sides of the sheets over the previous sheet and bind them together using a watertight rivet. For an even more water-tight connection, install alongside a rivet washer.
